First, identify how your company creates customer value.
In all likelihood, you’ll find many steps, tasks and processes that actively destroy value. Work with your team to remove those first.
Next, identify all the non-value-added but necessary steps in your process. These steps are your first candidates for digitization.
Think Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for redundant, repetitive tasks or simple integration for redundant data entry.
Last, look for technology use-cases that bolster, accelerate or improve those tasks that truly create lasting value for your customers. These become your strategic, game changing investment opportunities.
Finally, talk to your customers before pulling the trigger on the final category. The voice of your customer is important. A faster delivery time on a product doesn’t help anybody in the long term if they can’t receive it or it unnecessarily ties up their working capital.
